Wall of Time

Location: Djerba, Tunisia
Project Duration: 2019
Surface Area: 2 sqm
Status: Completed

Project Summary

We start by collecting material in and around the site of our intervention. Between two wooden formworks the wall is mounted layer by layer.

The layers are compacted by hand by simple ramming. The wall is left abandoned in the lagoon, it will suffer all possible and imaginable attacks, the air saturated with salt and humidity, the wind, the rain, the extreme sunshine, etc.

Every year I visit the wall, like a pilgrimage, to hear about it, see its condition, follow its deterioration. (Sometimes even passing friends send me photos). He is there, and he has resisted for 4 years, for how long, we do not yet know.

But what is certain is that his resistance will be a real rant against the construction industry. A natural material, collected on site, deployed with simple means and which can be an ecological and responsible alternative.

The wall will crumble until it reaches the ground, in the meantime, we are still visiting it.

the installation is collaborative work between Handover Egypt, Hasni & Hasni architects and the H2TEAM with both egyptian and tunisian architecture students.
